When we decided to upgrade our main door with a smart lock, we encountered an unexpected challenge: a small gap on the door, left by the old lock. This situation led us to understand the importance of how you collaborate, design, and manufacture in the process of product development.
We faced two typical options: revert to the traditional lock or replace the entire door. But we chose a different path for product development!
Embracing Design Thinking
The engineering, design and product actualization trait in us got thinking of various solutions. Our criteria: not to waste the door and it has to look good.
After some discussions and brainstorming ideas, we came up with a smart solution: a sleek metal plate to cover the gap on both sides of the door. Our talented engineers got to work, designing and refining the idea to accommodate the old hole and the new lock’s mechanism. Careful consideration was made to ensure that the new lock was able to fit in the metal plate and the smart lock to function well – hence thickness and positioning was important.
Collaboration at its best
With our partners, we manufactured a stunning piece that seamlessly integrated with our existing door. It went through various fabrication process including laser cutting and powder coating. This demonstrates how we Collaborate, Design, Manufacture for product development.
The result? A flawless finish that exceeded our expectations!
