Porsche chooses Malaysia for its first assembly facility outside of Europe – a testament to Malaysian manufacturing

From humble beginnings in 1948, Porsche has grown to be one the top car company in the world. Porsche has virtually untarnished reputation and are considered among the finest performance vehicles. Many adore Porsche for its technical mastery, aesthetically good looking designs along, reliability and performance.

“The new assembly site in Malaysia meets specific market needs and operates alongside Porsche’s established network of production sites in Europe. In particular, it meets comprehensive quality standards set forth by Porsche when assembling Porsche sports cars,” said Albrecht Reimold, Member of the Executive Board for Production and Logistics at Porsche during the launch of Porsche’s Malaysian site.

Porsche’s decision signifies its confidence in Malaysia’s conducive ecosystem and strength to support their long-term growth. This ecosystem has been developed over the decades by various global companies that have chosen Malaysia to be their manufacturing hub.

Malaysia has been strong in various industries and at different tiers of the supply chain. From primary commodities like oil & gas, palm oil & rubber, to downstream petrochemicals products like resins, rubber and specialty chemicals. Further down the value chain, Malaysia is key in the production of semiconductor components (and its supporting industries quite mature) to Electronics and Electrical Products, automotive and aerospace components.

Therefore, companies can leverage on this maturity in manufacturing and have confidence that manufacturing in Malaysia will have the similar quality and consistency as in Germany. Hence, even Mittlestand can benefit from this ecosystem and many have started exploring the manufacturing of products in Malaysia. Nevertheless it is important to engage reputable suppliers and the right support system.
